July 5, 2026 — A brutal heat wave gripping the eastern United States has forced the last-minute cancellation of major Fourth of July celebrations, including Philadelphia’s signature semiquincentennial parade and Washington D.C.’s Independence Day morning festivities, as record temperatures threatened public safety. The National Weather Service reported that more than 165 million Americans sweltered under dangerous heat indices on Friday, with temperatures topping 100 degrees Fahrenheit in several cities along the I-95 corridor.

In Philadelphia, organizers of the highly anticipated Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade—a cornerstone of the nation’s 250th birthday—pulled the plug just hours before the event was set to step off. “We simply cannot host an event of this size and scale under these dangerous heat conditions,” said Michael DelBene, CEO of Wawa Welcome America, in a statement. The cancellation disappointed thousands who had gathered near Independence Hall, but officials emphasized that the risk of heatstroke and dehydration among participants and spectators was too severe.

Washington D.C. faced similar disruptions. The Great American State Fair on the National Mall was temporarily shuttered Friday afternoon after emergency crews treated multiple visitors for heat-related illnesses. D.C. Fire and EMS Department officials confirmed at least 11 people required hospital transport due to the extreme conditions. The fair reopened later Friday evening after temperatures moderated, but the city’s planned Independence Day morning parade was scrapped entirely. “The safety of our participants, spectators, and staff is our top priority,” stated the organizing group, Freedom 250.

The heat wave has cast a shadow over what was expected to be a historic holiday weekend, with President Donald Trump hosting a White House celebration for the nation’s 250th birthday and several FIFA World Cup matches taking place outdoors. From New Jersey to Maryland, and as far west as Colorado, local governments and event planners have scrambled to cancel or postpone fireworks displays, community barbecues, and outdoor concerts. With the National Weather Service warning that the oppressive heat could persist into early next week, officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
